St Andrew’s United Church or Manitou United Church?! Both names are correct; the original church building structure was built in 1901 and named St Andrew’s United Church. As it is common in many places in small towns, the name of the only United Church is often referred to by place, so Manitou United Church is also a name we use. According to the Charitable Organizations and Canada Revenue we are Manitou United Church.
Just like a name can help us identify and find a place we are looking for, it does not always tell the story of who the Church is. Our community of faith is, for the most part, a traditional United Church with a traditional church service: morning services, a printed bulletin outlining the service with a group of people in the pews who come from long time families of original settlers to the area. There are some new folks who have moved to town and join us as they are able. Our spiritual journey is inviting us to consider how broad our welcome us and what God calls us to be and to do in our world today. We engage in open and honest reflection of the Biblical stories alongside modern and secular understandings of peace, justice, inclusiveness and reconciliation. We are not an affirming congregation at this point in our journey, yet we are opening our hearts and minds to the conversation, this requires deep, meaningful, and prayerful conversations- “one more step along the road we go” is often heard here along with “let us build a house where all are welcome”.
We are working on maintaining a historic building and more modern hall, called the Christian Education Building or CE for short. The newer space has been home to many users, everything from flu clinics to elections. The large and open space with a health inspected and certified kitchen allows many groups to rent our space for birthdays, showers, and family gatherings as well as funeral luncheons and meeting groups. The historic part of our church holds the sanctuary, with many beautiful stay glass windows, soaring ceiling height and balcony it is a thing of beauty to behold. It also means we are looking at ways of being greener and more respectful of Creation. We have recently upgraded our old oil furnaces to HE propane furnaces. We are also looking at other energy saving measures.
